Finally, a reasonable perspective on an important issue.

I love this guy...he's brilliant and if I can figure out this blog thing I'll post a talk of his I recently heard. In the meantime he has articulated my perspective perfectly on a relevant issue of concern to many today. Read here.

    I liked the article. The same approach could be used for other sins the Christian Right tends to fixate on, such as illicit drug use and gambling. I also think it's possible to be against so-called "hate crimes" for purely philosophical reasons, regardless of one's perspective on homosexuality. I think the problem with hate-crimes legislation is that it criminalizes thought. In addition, such laws suggest that certain victims of violent crime are more worthy of protection than others. The Crimson Line did an excellent blog on this subject which you may want to check out for further reading.

    As a follow-up to my last comment, I recently read that two teenage girls are in violation of an Illinois state "hate crime statute" for handing out flyers about the Bible's teachings on homosexuality. They face felony charges and are locked up in juvenile detention while bail is denied. Somehow this doesn't strike me as "reasonable."

    Wow...that last one is quite surprising. While I obviously have a hard time with what they were doing and in whose name they were doing it...that level of punishment for handing out flyers sharing what a major holy book has written about that topic? Seems like a little much. Doesn't the 'crime' part of hate-crime statute need to have evidence for an intent to cause harm?
